Customer Buzz
My wife purchased this machine (D290) after much research. I have read other comments and still don't think they say enough. I now have owned this coffee maker for about two months and have had no problems. I really don't drink much espresso per say, I usually use it as a large cup/ mug coffe maker. You can use any of the capsules and they will make a great full cup of coffee. Or you may use it as a short pour for espresso shots. First the pros for this machine: It is super easy to use. Put capsule in and hit a button. I like the programable cup size as you don't have to stand there and make it fill the mug by hand. I think most the coffee varieties are excellent. I like strong coffe with cream and sugar, so usually like those from 7-10 strength. The crema on the coffee is wonderful, and you will drink more coffee than you think in a day, because it is so easy to make.

Downsides:
1. Capsules: yes you have to order off there website for the capsules. .49c a capsule. But shipping is fixed at $6 for no matter how much you order. Stock up. If you want to tamp and brew a wide variety, no I guess this machine is not for you...but it does have a great selection!

2. Warmth. I am used to boiling water for my french press. The coffe is hot, but I think somewhat less than what I am used to out of a coffee maker or french press. Because it is an "espresso machine" I understand that it brews 10 or so degrees less than a reg coffee.

3. Height of spout: this is one that bugs me. Had they just made it higher! many of my mugs won't quite fit. Have to have some low wider mugs.

Now I also must comment on the romeo vs the d290, because I had a hard time making up my mind. Ultimately, they make the same coffee! If you want the fancy self disposer --which I agree is only one thing that could break--- then go for the extra cash. But I think the d290, has the perfect match of mechanical vs features for the money.

All in all if you have the money, this really does make excellent coffee. And is so fast and easy to have a cup that you will love it.

Good machine, but I would recommend Nespresso E350 Romeo. It costs $150 more, but if you really love good espresso it worth it. You will get much more choices and better quality from Romeo and it is very easy to operate.

Customer Buzz
I have had three Nespresso machines for a long time now and use them a lot. My comments concern the Nespresso system rather than any particular machine.

The idea of the capsules rather than using coffee beans requires some trade offs, but has lots of huge advantages. The capsules are super convenient, fast, clean and neat, attractive, and allow you to easily serve a variety of coffee blends (decaf, Latin American, African, pure Arabica, etc, which is fun). A big advantage is that they stay fresh for months at a time, so you can always have them on hand when you need them.

Comparing the Nespresso system with the conventional system shows the value of convenience. Conventional machine: you have to have fresh beans, you have to have an expensive burr grinder (more counter space, more to clean, more to break down), you have to get the fineness of the grind correct, you have to measure the ground coffee accurately, you have to tamp the coffee in the holder correctly, you have to pour the correct amount of water through. This requires a large amount of time, effort, experimentation, patience, and experience. Serving a party of 10 people like this could easily take you an hour, and you are making a lot of noise and not enjoying the party, and making a big mess to clean up later.

A conventional machine could never be used in your office or company kitchen, but a Nespresso machine works out very nicely in that situation.

On the downside, 45 cents or more (for special editions) per shot of espresso is a little expensive compared to doing it with beans. You are limited to the Nespresso capsules, nothing else will come close to working. This means you can't try out the interesting jars of beans at your local coffee shop. There may come a day when the capsules are not available, but I don't see that happening.

The big downside is the quality of the espresso produced by the capsules, and therein is my main gripe. After many years they have recently expanded their offerings from 10 varieties or 15 or so. I haven't tried all the new ones, but I didn't really like any of the old ones. Most of them include some Robusta coffee beans in the blend. That's unusual because gourmet coffee is 100% Arabica, and my opinion is the Robusta is a problem. I have to wonder if Nespresso is trying to cut costs in this most critical aspect of an otherwise first-rate system. However, once or twice a year Nespresso releases a "special blend" for a limited time. This is usually 100% Arabica. In 1998 and 1999, the special blend was very good. In 2000 it was bad but then they released another one in June 2001 that was very good. They have a new, more expensive line of coffees that I haven't yet explored.

The final alternative is the "super-automatic" style machine, that with a single button push automatically grinds the beans, measures, tamps, pours the espresso, and dumps out the spent grounds. That's great but it requires fresh beans and that's a problem for me. I think maybe a food vacuum sealer might solve that problem.

One final comment: Don't fool yourself into thinking that a machine at home, no matter how nice, is going to save you money at Starbucks. Nothing can replace that fad inducing experience.

Nespresso D290 Concept Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Machine with Aeroccino Milk Frother, Satin Chrome

Product Description

Combination package of the Concept Automatic and the Aeroccino. Offered Satin Chrome, the Concept Automatic is the perfect option for espresso and lungo lovers and the accompanying Aeroccino offers one touch milk frothing or steaming. The Aeroccino is a one touch machine (automatic stop function) with simple milk dosage indicated in the jug (two levels: milk froth and hot milk). The Concept Automatic offers Automatic and programmable Coffee Quantity. A high pressure pump (19 bars) extracts all the aromas and develops a smooth crema in the cup. A thermobloc which heats water to 187°and 196° during extraction and empties the remaining water after each use so that the water is fresh for each preparation. A simple system which perforates the capsule and soaks all the ground coffee to optimally filter the coffee. The Concept Automatic has a revolutionary jaw system and automatic ejection of used capsule and also includes an auto-cappucinatore steam nozzle. Removable water container. A Tray for used capsules. Back-lit control button. The machine deploys technology essential for preparing an outstanding Espresso, and is exceptionally easy to use.

Customer Buzz
The Nespresso machines produce 1-4oz of coffee at a time. That's not a mug or travel cup, but a small, strong, but very drinkable brew. I state this because I have read reviews of pod machines, written by good ol' folks that drag them into the ground because they don't make quarts of coffee at a time. This is an espresso producing machine, not the local 7-11.

I received my re-conditioned D290 about a month ago. With a purchase like this I read extensively about different features of the different machines and their abilities. I chose this machine because it had the steam wand and hot water in addition to 2 programmable dose buttons.

The machine works excellently. Water tank is good enough size to make several drinks without being re-filled and is simple to re-fill when the time comes. Set-up was quick but deciphering the picto-instructions was a little bothersome and left out some detail. The espresso, lungo, and decaf it produces are of excellent quality. It is a little loud during use but not more than other pod/pump machines.

On the down side, the froth attachment is worthless. It's a contraption that attaches to the steam/water wand that does a poor job of producing steamed milk for latte/cappuccino. My advice is to use the steam function to heat/froth your milk and if you don't know how, Google it and it's easy to learn.
Overall I believe it's a good machine for a coffee connoisseur.

Customer Buzz
At one time I owned a Krups espresso/cappuccino machine that I ended up using for only a few months since it was such a pain to set up and clean. Right now, it's sitting in my basement, gathering cobwebs. However, when I received this Nespresso machine as a gift, I now can have cappuccino whenever I want in mere minutes. I turn the machine on, wait for the solid red light to show proper heat/steam (it takes about 30 seconds), pop in a pod, and press the correct cup size for espresso or the larger "lungo." The coffee is forced through the pod and into the cup below in seconds, with a nice brown crema on top. For cappuccino or latte, you need only to then press the steam button (the machine comes with a steamer attachment), stick the tube in a cup of milk, press the lever, and watch the machine suck up the milk and deposit it, hot and foamy, into the cup. Clean up? A breeze. Even if you steam milk, you have only let the steamer suck in water for a few seconds and deposit it into another cup. The empty pods are tossed into an internal receptacle that holds ten or so. There is no tamping for preparation. No scraping the grounds out afterward. No dishwashing. It really is that simple. And the espresso and cappuccino taste just like they do in Italy.

Of course, there are downsides to every machine, and this one is expense. Not only is the machine pricey, but the pods must be purchased through Nespresso at approximately fifty cents per pod. (They come in sleeves of ten.) The Nespresso also must be particularly sensitive to power surges, since mine stopped working in less than a year, as did my sister's, for no apparent reason. But . . . the customer service is awesome. I called, and they sent a loaner machine overnight, with packing and a pre-paid label to send mine in for servicing. When mine was fixed a week later, I simply shipped the loaner machine back using, again, a pre-paid label. I didn't pay a cent. Still, I now leave my machine unplugged when not in use. Others may want to put it on a surge protector.

I was worried that the pre-measured portions of coffee would taste canned, but they have excellent flavor. Once you buy this machine, you will be part of the "Nespresso Club" (wait until you see how exclusive they make it seem -- you'll have to laugh!). You will buy your coffee off the web site or over the phone, and receive it within two days. The "Ristretto" pods make the best full-strength espresso and cappuccino. Even when I make "lungo" coffee, I tend to use the higher strength coffees such as "Arpeggio" since I'm not a fan of the milder types. "Decaffeinato Intenso" makes competent decaf cappuccino as well as lungo, although I wish they had an even stronger decaf. (The regular "Decaffeinato" is milder.)

This machine is a luxury, to be sure, and I doubt I would have splurged on my own. However, this is one gift that I use regularly, with as much appreciation for it as I had the first week. Unlike my Krups machine, this one sits proudly on my counter. Friends who come to dinner eye it longingly, hoping that, once again, I'll offer up espresso or cappuccino with dessert. Of course, I always oblige.

If you are more interested in "lungo" (regular) coffee, then I suggest you look at the new single-cup coffee makers such as Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System.

Capresso Jura-Capresso ENA5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso machine.

I bought my machine in February and followed that up with the purchase of a two stage frothing nozzle.
All was well for a couple of days, when the nozzle flew off into the milk, splashing it everywhere and blasting steam out as follow up.
This despite stripping down the nozzle after each use and cleaning it with the brushes provided.
After this happening several times, I returned the unit to the "Coffee Shop". I was informed after a week that it was a cleaning problem. There was nothing wrong with the machine!!!
They would return the machine to me on payment of £128.
I accept that part of this charge is supplying a container since I had made the error of destroying the original (who has space for all that sort of stuff?)
They won't budge on this and despite having a lot of customers they informed me who had experienced the same problem.
It would seem to me to be yet another design fault since the fit of the nozzle onto the machine is by a soft rubber connector.

But it seems the customer is in the wrong and all these customers had not cleaned their nozzles sufficiently well. I don't think so!

Best not to buy this machine if you intend to use this frothing nozzle.

Customer Buzz
This is my first superautomatic machine. I started getting into drinking espresso and cappuccino about 3 years ago and found myself at the coffee shop 3 or 4 times weekly. I do wished the machine would get the water hotter than it does, even at its hottest setting, but can tell a night and day difference in the quality of coffee this machine produces over a Bunn coffee maker.

Customer Buzz
Seriously, this is one fine machine. After my third trip to France, I finally went ahead with this purchase. I just couldn't get that FLAVOR from other machines that I love to experience while in France. This machine takes away my longing for the French cafe, right down to the "americana" size I so desire.
Only drawback if you could call it one is having to fill the water tank frequently.
My husband can even work it---that says alot about the ease of use. Watch the cd that comes with the machine and keep your manual handy. You will be a pro in no time.

The Swiss made Ena5 is the low end of high end coffee makers $1,200. As perfectos (coffee snobs) call it,"superautomatics". The Ena5 makes good, rich coffee. Great crema! Nice, but wobbly frother. It's easy to use. The only drawback, and it's a BIG one is that the coffee isn't as hot as most people would like it. If you linger over your coffee, your out of luck. Short of paying $3,000 to get perfection (with NO guarantees) I'll give this Ena5 a chance. I absolutely love the slim look. Doesn't take up a lot of space on the counter. I just got it so don't know how easy it will be to maintain. American coffee machines are super inferior in every way.

Customer Buzz
I love that the ENA doesn't take up any counter space. It's small, sleek, very compact, and makes any kind of coffee drink imaginable. I also appreciate its energy-saving features.

I bought this for Christmas 3 months ago. I make only latees so can't comment on its expresso. After following directions, which were very good, the milk frother exploded off the machine the first time I used the machine - splattering milk around. Upon calling the company a month later when I was fed up with the problem, they sent a new frother, which did not come off.
One day, when I attempted to steam milk, smoke arose from the back of the machine. I unplugged the machine and called the company, and they sent a new machine, postage paid both ways. The new machine works fine without blasting off the frother. The customer service is very good.
The ability to use decaf grounds when your beans are regular works very well. It warns you when you need to add beans, add water or empty grounds.
My complaint with the machine is that it does not make better foam than my old Krups Il Primo, which costs under $100. The foam is not as fine as the Compresso that my daughter owns which is 6 years old and is no longer made. The water container is small, and needs refilling more than once a day for my 5 cups. The taste is not the knock your socks off latee that one gets from the better cafes or that my daughter gets.

I purchased this machine for my husband and myself after Christmas to repalce our 2 yr. old Gaggia Coffee Deluxe. We had so many problems with the Gaggia we gave up on making a good non stovetop espresso. We found it in the ENA 3. We chose the ENA 3 because it was affordable and we really didn't need the express frother and the few other features the ENA 5 had.

We are thrilled with the ease of use and the easy to follow instructions. We have tried several different beans and they have all produced a great cup of espresso with great crema. We have made espresso, cappuccino, lattes and hot chocolate. They have all turned out superb. The machine is almost self cleaning. It rinses after heating just before making the first cup and when you shut the machine down. You only have to dump the grounds and clean the drip trays from the rinsing. A very easy process. The unit came with a great DVD, clearyl water filter and 2 cleaning tablets.

We now start our day with an espresso and another in the afternoon. It is just so simple to use and we are really enjoying our cups of coffee.

We would highly recommend this machine.

I have been drinking french pressed coffee for many years and recently bought an ENA 3 so I can make latte and other milk/soy milk based drinks.

I bought my ENA 3 from Bed bath and beyond with the 20% off coupon; wish Amazon do price matching.

What I like about this machine:
1. Small(9" width), take up less less counter space than any other super automatic machines on the market.

2. Ease of use-can be as easy as press one button to make a cup of coffee

3. The coffee/espresso taste great and reasonably easy to make a milk/soy milk based drinks

4. Easy to clean and maintain

Dislike:
1. As the other reviewer noted, the rotary button can be a bit confusing. Take a few practice run to get it right.

2. Wish the water tank is in the front

Update:

After six weeks of use, I am very very happy with the machine. The machine makes better espresso drinks(way better than Starbucks). I tried Lilly but moved on to try Lavazza espresso beans due to price.

After weeks of research we ended up selecting the Jura-Capresso ENA 4.

I was a bit skeptical that this small little super automatic could really replace our larger manual and brew quality espresso. I went to a local retailer and was fortunate enough to be able to use a demo unit. I was amazed by how simple and intuitive the ENA 4 is to use; while at the same time provides a level of flexibility and control well beyond my expectations.

The Jura-Capresso site has some great video demos as well as other info that is worth checking out.
