Product Description
Considering peoples love affair with chocolate, bodum designed a delightful chocolate jug with unique blender-like qualities. The bodum design significantly differs from classic ceramic or porcelain chocolate jugs but is still reminiscent of grandma's milk jug in form and shape. Chocolate milk is growing popular with children and grown-ups alike. The cleverly devised manual blender of the Chocolatiere consists of a propeller attached to a spiral rod that smoothly mixes the chocolate or chocolate powder, producing a rich froth. This makes it a fun-to-use tool, ensuring the best mixed chocolate milk ¿ the sinful temptation par excellence! The handle and the jug are made of heat-resistant, see-through borosilicate glass. The lid is made of stainless steel and plastic with a silicone gasket for better tightness. All parts are dishwasher safe. The manual blender can be fully disassembled for better cleaning. Fine drinking chocolate is becoming more and more popular across the US. Now with the Chocolatiere now you can make drinking chocolate at home. Just cut up some fine chocolate and place it into the jug. Fill the jug with warm milk, set the lid in place and move the plunger up and down until you have a nice mixed chocolate and foam. For an even easier method, put cold milk into the microwave safe borosilicate glass jug and heat the milk in the microwave. Then just add the chocolate and froth. If you let the chocolate milk sit for a few minutes between servings it will naturally start to separate ¿ that's ok. Just plunge a few times to mix everything back up. The Chocolatiere has a 1.0 l, 34 oz. capacity. This product was thought up by people in the Bodum marketing department trying to come up with a gift idea -- who wouldn't want a hot chocolate maker as a gift? The problem, is that making hot chocolate is very simple. All you need is a pot to heat the milk and whisk to stir in the chocolate powder or solids. This product is at best a serving piece. Do not buy.
This absolutely would have been a fantastic product if hadn't broken the second time I used it. Although it can be put in the dishwasher, I washed it by hand before and after the first use. When I used it for the second time, though, the plastic piece at the end of the mixing mechanism broke into thirds, rendering it unusable.
I also agree with the other comments about the frothing qualities - there is NO WAY you're going to get foam like in the picture unless you're adding dishwashing detergent to your hot chocolate.
Fantastic idea from an otherwise fantastic company, but this time, sadly disappointing.
I bought this as a gift for my dad, but he fell out of his hot chocolate phase, so I kept it myself. I was really disappointed that it doesn't really do anything. I can't fit the jug in my microwave to heat the milk in there (and I can't imagine who has a microwave that tall) and it certainly doesn't foam anything no matter how vigorously you use the mixer thing. I make much better hot chocolate using a pan on the stove with chocolate syrup or pieces of chocolate. And the milk stays hot longer than from the microwave, plus I can foam it with a regular frother.
I am a tea drinker, and I love my Bodum tea pots. But this Chocolatiere thing is pretty much worthless as far as I'm concerned.
I admit, I used it for regular out of the envelope hot chocolate. I just haven't gotten around to trying real chocolate. It did do a great job of mixing it well, with no residual chunks of powder normally encountered when simply using a spoon. I feel that if I wanted frothy hot chocolate, I could use my Magic Bullet for the same results, or even a blender. I personally wouldn't waste my money with this item; the glass appears delicate and the plastic seems cheap. I wouldn't imagine it lasting very long, especially if it weren't stored properly, in a safe place. Definitely not for leaving it out on the kitchen counter.
EDIT: Mine broke as well, on the 4th use; the "propeller" piece. It just simply split in half and fell off the rod. Not wasting my time with customer service. I'll try to find something at the hardware store, otherwise it's off to the landfill...would change rating to 1 star.
This is just a glass pitcher with a little plastic propeler. The plastic broke the first time we used it, and the company refused to replace the item. Don't bother, it is not worth the money. If you buy this item you will end up with a useless glass pitcher.
Great product. So easy to make hot chocolate. My kids love to help and this product is so easy my kids can do it themselves - with a little help of course. The size is convenient. Not too big but enough for our family of 5 to each get our own cup full. The handle makes it easy to hold and pour.
I have not yet tried the included recipe for making a chocolate drink but I did make a batch of soy milk in it and also it would be very good for keeping juice in, like orange juice that needs to be shook or stirred before pouring. The glass pitcher itself is attractive and microwavable so even if you don't use the mixing paddles you'll still have a handy little glass pitcher.
Even if you are completely addicted to hot chocolate, you can probably live without this device.
That said, it is a far more entertaining way to make hot chocolate than you usually might. The plunging/spinning action is pretty clever and before I even tried making hot chocolate in it, I was pushing up and down and watching the mixing propeller spin for longer than I'd like to admit. This could definitely be a fun product for kids to mix their own hot chocolate.
The pitcher itself is quite nice looking with a simple but beautiful shape, and is large enough for several servings at a time. If you plan on hosting a lot of guests for the holidays, this would be a fun and elegant way to serve hot chocolate.
It does what it's aimed to do, and seems to do it quite well and in a unique way which is worth a 5-star rating, despite being a unitasker.
A bit too frivolous for me, personally (small enough kitchen as it is), it is now taking up space in my mother-in-laws' kitchen.
This is something you don't need, But who buys what we need!
This would make a good gift if your going to some ones house for dinner, and bring chocolate to go with it etc.
This is a good looking pitcher. it didn't make my hot chocolate frothy, but I didn't care about that.
The hot chocolate was good, and looks nice to serve in.
The top has a handle that you push up and down for the paddles to work.
It works very easy.Its plastic.
The Kids love it.
I have found many other uses for this.
I also use this for making salad dressings, and other mixes.
Just make sure you wash it right after.
I have made green tea and served it in this.
Its different and good looking.
I have used this to keep fresh orange juice, and use the paddles to mix it before serving it.
I think the parts to this are a bit cheap, but so far it has not broke.
The handle looks to me, to be plastic, but the pitcher is a very nice clear Glass.
Here's the thing... This is not something I would buy for myself as the NEED for it does not exist. It is however one of those fun items I wouldn't mind giving or receiving as a gift. It works well and makes delicious hot chocolate, but I can make the same hot chocolate on the stove and dirty one less dish.
The Pro's: Blends the chocolate nicely, plunges easily. The pitcher makes the chocolate easy to pour as opposed to the normal way I do it straight from the pan. Makes an eye pleasing way to serve guests hot chocolate. Makes a fair amount of chocolate at 1 liter capacity it serves a little over 4 cups.
The Con's: Some chocolate remained melted and stuck to the bottom. The metal top got a little hot as I was plunging. I never got the 'froth' I was supposed to achieve and I plunged till I could plunge no more.
Bottom Line: You can get the same results, maybe even a little better, using a pan, the stove and a French whisk. If you have a large kitchen just begging for empty space to be filled with products, this is for you. It's an attractive, efficient, yet useless kitchen gadget.
