Product Description
The world of coffee would be half as exciting if there was not that delicious layer of milk foam sitting on top of it! From lattes to cappuccinos, the Chambord Milk Frother brings any coffee to its perfection. Simply add cold non-fat milk to the fill line before setting the lid in place. Then pull and push the plunger until you see your milk turn to a frothy foam. The volume of milk froth will approximately double. Allow the froth to sit for a minute and thicken up. If you would like hot froth, just remove the lid/plunger unit and put the carafe with frothed milk in the microwave on high for 20 seconds. Once you are ready, use a spoon to scoop out the frothy foam and top off your favorite coffee drink. The glass beaker is made of durable, heat-resistant borosilicate glass. With the bodum Chambord Frother and a bodum Coffee Press you can be your own barista at home! Dishwasher safe. When it comes to frothing milk, this milk frother certainly does the job well. Just a few plunges will give you nicely frothed milk. I also find that when pouring it out the milk separates nicely from the foam (I always take the plunger out). So, it does the job I bought it for quite well.
However, it has one serious flaw which makes me give it only two stars, namely that the lid is made out of two separate components which are not properly sealed. What this means is that when you froth your milk a little too vigorously the lid sucks this milk in. As there is no way of opening the lid, you can't really clean it, and instead you have it slowly leaking into your milk the next time you start plunging.
The same of course goes for water - if you put this thing into the dishwasher it comes out with the lid full of water - which again leaks out into any milk you are trying to froth as soon as you start plunging.
My solution to this has been to froth less vigorously and only wash it lightly by hand with running water (no soaking allowed!) - but even so, some water/milk does get into the lid so I usually wait several days in between using it to make sure it has dried out.
I see one other reviewer has mentioned this issue (and a possible solution - namely drilling holes into the bottom of the lid to allow it to drain- I might give that a try too).
Minor issues:
- The container is made out of very thin glass, so it will quickly become as hot as your milk, making it a bit hard to pour. This is nothing that a layer of a kitchen towel can't fix - but if you find this to be a big issue, then search for a model with a handle - or one made out of ceramic.
- The lid doesn't seal very well to the container, so sometimes during my vigorous frothing milk can spill out at the top. And no, I do not overfill the container, and yes, I do have the solid lip of the lid covering the spout - but it doesn't form a seal.
If it wasn't for the leaky lid collecting stale water and milk I would give this frother 4-5 stars and happily buy it as gifts for my friends. The minor issues I mentioned don't really bother me much - but having stale water/milk in my froth does. So next time when buying a frother, I'll be searching for a better design of the lid.
I heat up the milk in the microwave and then give it a few quick plunges. Nice froth, but not as silky as you would get from steam. The glass is fairly delicate. I broke it after owning for about two years and will have to purchase a replacement glass from Bodum.
I bought two of these frothers. They worked extremely well but proved to be too fragile. One trick to get good froth is to allow air to go in while making the froth. That is, do not twist the cover to block the airflow. The glass container for the first one broke after three weeks of use. The second one arrived with a missing seal that is supposed to go around the moveable "piston" to prevent the milk to flow around the piston. I didn't bother returning it because I had the older seal from the broken unit. Anyway, the container for the second frother broke after two months of use and I am not planning to replace it. I wish the container was made of plastic.
The frother does a great job, produces nice thick foam, and is very easy to clean. I get the best results using nonfat milk, frothing it cold and then zapping it for 20 seconds or so in the microwave, then letting it sit a minute or two to thicken.
As noted by other reviewers, milk from the plunger rod does tend to leak out of the cap as you plunge up and down. I wrap a piece of paper towel around the plunger where it comes out of the hole on the cap, and that takes care of the problem. (This issue and the fact that the container doesn't have a handle so you need to use an oven glove to hold it when it's been microwaved took my review down from 5 stars to 4 stars.)
One reviewer said that dirty water got trapped in the cap and ran down into the froth. I have no idea what he/she means. There is no place in the cap for anything to get trapped, and why dirty water would be there anyway is anyone's guess.
Both parts of the frother are dishwasher-safe (top rack). I use my frother daily but don't run my dishwasher every day, so I wash it by hand in hot water immediately after use and put it in the dishwasher whenever I run it. Every few days, while I'm drinking my morning coffee, I leave the plunger in a cup of hot water with some white vinegar added for 5 - 10 minutes so that no milk solids build up and turn sour in the mesh. (A friend had a similar frother years ago, didn't do this, and one day realized the mesh part smelled very bad and couldn't at that point be properly cleaned.)
The lid gets filled with liquid--which cannot be drained out--yet dribbles down the plunger rod into the froth mixture, rendering the frother a use-once-then-throw-away contraption.
I don't want rotten, moldy, germy liquid escaping the lid into my froth. Yuck!
This design flaw could be corrected if Bodum could insert a cylindrical, hollow rod inside the lid for the plunger rod to fit into. Then no liquid could escape into the lid as it plunges up and down--or as it is washed. Also it would be nice if the plunger rod could unscrew from the plunger knob--maybe then I could drain it? Maybe not.
The frother is small; only makes enough froth for two.
It has no handle; it is easy to get burnt fingers and might slip from fingers while being cleaned.
If the bad-lid design could be corrected, I would give this frother 10 stars.
HOWEVER: Frother beautifully complements my Bodum Chambord French Press. The flask is easily cleaned with a small dishmop---so cute. I love this inexpensive/almost perfect little frother so much--I might have my husband drill some big holes in the inside of the lid so I can clean and drain it.
If by some chance your frother doesn't misbehave and dribble into your froth, here are my directions for perfect meringue-like froth: (I prefer to use soymilk)
You will need:
a) A wooden chopstick and/or a small, long spatula
b) Low-fat milk or milk substitute (I use soymilk)
c) Sugar or flavored syrup (optional)
d) Prepared coffee, cocoa, ice cream, pie, smoothie etc.
To make froth:
1) Never fill above `fill line'
2) EITHER microwave liquid (without lid) for 60 seconds
3) OR use cold liquid for cold creations
4) Plunge gently for 5-8 seconds
5) Remove plunger
6) Add 1 tsp. Sugar or flavored syrup
7) Stir gently with chopstick
8) Let froth sit for 1 minute
9) Spoon out 'meringue-froth' onto your creation
Tastes/feels like soft, homemade marshmallow...Yummy.
This milk frother is affordable, easy to use, easy to clean and your cappuccinos end up being and tasting even better than the Starbucks or Panera ones
This little Bodum manual frother works better than any of the battery powered "wand" frothers I've tried, and nearly as well as a steam frother. Using a microwave oven, you can warm the milk in less than a minute right in the Bodum flask. Then about ten seconds of easy pumping fills the flask to overflowing with thick froth that stays fluffy in your mug. But handle the Bodum flask with care, because the glass breaks easily. I broke my first flask after about three months. But the price is so reasonable, I didn't hesitate to order a replacement.
My wife and I enjoy a cup of capucchino on a Saturday morning and this frother is perfect for making the milk. Friends have an electric frother and have said they envy our simple little device.
We put the 5 oz. of milk in the beaker (there is a "fill to" line) then pop it in the microwave for 1 minute. I then froth up a bunch of milk in literary 5 or 6 seconds. The foam is very sturdy and stands up well to pouring.
One downside is that there really isn't enough milk for more than two cups of coffee, so when we have company I have to go through the process a couple of times. I was tempted, once, to use more milk than recommended and it was difficult to froth and got a bit messy. The fill line, at about 1/4 the way up the glass is about as far as I dare go now.
Awesome product, if you like a latte or lots of froth, this is the easiest way to get it. It definitely works best with cold skim milk, and the longer is sits, the thicker the froth. If you use very hot coffee and add the cold milk, you got the perfect temperature! Also washes or rinses very well, I keep mine in the dish drain, so it is always readily available.
The frother works extremely well, however the glass of the frother is very thin and brittle and will crack and break with the slightest impact. I have broken two already while washing dishes. There is NO REPLACEMENT glass container available, so if you break it, you spend another $20.00 to buy a replacement. Bonjour makes a frother also, and they sell a replacement glass container for about $10.00. I guess I'm clumsy, so I'm going to buy a Bonjour next time.
